Every morning, case files land in your inbox. Every file is a wall of text — and somewhere in that wall is the thing that wins it: the signature from someone who had no authority to sign, the date that comes after the date it's supposed to come before, the vendor whose only employee is the CFO's brother-in-law. Read carefully and you'll find it. Skim, and you'll pick the confident option that loses.

Then choose your line. The safe play always works, and pays badly, and quietly grinds your nerve down until you can't bluff anymore. The aggressive play pays like a partner's bonus — if your Boldness is high enough to land it, and if it fails, your Reputation takes the hit. Technical arguments sit in between: slower, surer, less glory. Cowardice is a slow death. Recklessness is a fast one.

Time is the real opponent. An eight-hour workday, every play costs hours, and careful plays cost more. Stay late and your Fatigue climbs; work exhausted and you start dropping things — a partner will send you home, and every deadline you left on the desk burns.

You are the newest junior associate at Parson Henderson LLP, and nobody has told you where the coffee is.

• Trials. Take a case to a jury. Opening, arguments, closing — and no odds on screen. You object by naming the ground, from a fixed list, and you have to be right. Silence on a proper question costs nothing; silence on an improper one is the only silence that hurts.
• Case prep boards. Put a chronology in order from memory. Match a witness's contradictions to the exhibits. Redact the privileged pages — and only the privileged pages, because hiding an ordinary record is document concealment.
• Covert action. Pick a lock with a tension bar that snaps if you push too hard. Cut a power feed by stopping three spinning circuits in their windows. Get caught and the file is lost — and the bar association starts a folder on you.
• The bench. Seven judges with temperaments, memories, and prices. One doubles the cost of a frivolous objection. One can be taken golfing. One can be bought — but bribes you pay are crimes you committed, whether they work or not.
• The firm. Delegate to associates who might be reliable, brave, lazy, or quietly working for the other side. Manage a rival gunning for your promotion. Reach Name Partner and inherit payroll, morale, and the lawsuits from everyone you ever fired.

The Fraud never went to law school and has a photographic memory. The Debtor owes $180,000 and a payment every three days. The Legacy has a parent's name on the wall and everyone knows it. The Defector jumped ship from a rival firm that hasn't forgiven them. The Boomerang was fired once, and hired back.
